Liana Fernandez Fox, Ph.D.
Professor, Hillsborough Community College
Dr. Liana Fernandez Fox is a native of Tampa and a descendant of Cuban and Sicilian cigar makers who settled in Ybor City. For 30 years she has been a Professor of Mathematics teaching for Hillsborough Community College at the Ybor City campus and at the University of South Florida.
Liana received her Ph.D. from USF in 1998 and is a past president of the USF Alumni Association and the League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County. She is a member of the Board of Governors of United Way of Florida and United Way Tampa Bay and a graduate of Leadership Florida.
Honors and recognitions include:
- University of Florida’s Award for Public Policy Volunteer of the Year
- Tampa-Hillsborough Urban League’s Whitney M. Young, Jr. award for Equal Opportunity
- the Silver Medallion Humanitarian Award by NCCJ
- Woman of Excellence Award by the Italian Club of Tampa
- Hispanic Woman of the Year (1997) by Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc.
For her service to the University of South Florida, Liana was honored as the first recipient of the USF Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award named in honor of the late Don Gifford, President Emeritus in 2000.
Liana has been married for 40 years to Robert A. Fox, also a Tampa native, and is the proud mother of two sons, Stephen and Justen.
